Saving your dial up networking password in Windows 95

With Windows 95 Dial Up Networking, when you start an Internet connection using your UniNet Dial-up account you should see the following window:

You should be able to put a tick in the "Save password" check-box. This will avoid you having to enter your password every time you wish to connect, and is a recommended action. With such long, meaningless computer-generated passwords, you should avoid the chore of having to type it in each time. If the Save password check-box is greyed-out so that you can not select it, then follow the steps below.

Click on start.gif (307 bytes) then select Settings, then Control Panel.  Double-click on the Passwords icon and you should see the following window:

Select the User Profiles tab and select the options shown above. When you click on OK you will be asked to restart your computer.

When your machine restarts you will be prompted with a window asking you to log on to Windows. In this window, enter any name as your username, but make sure that you leave the password blank.  When asked to confirm the blank password, just click OK, and you will then be asked if you wish to save the desktop preferences; just click Yes.

You will now be able to select the Save password check-box as described above.

As a slight side effect you will be asked to enter a login username and password every time you start windows. Providing you left your Windows password blank as described above, you should just be able to click OK and pass by this prompt.
