You can add a hit
counter to your web page simply by adding one line to the
HTML.
<img src="cgi-bin/counter.cgi?cf=/usr01/v-clients/<domain>/counter.dat ">
Where '<domain>' is your given
sub-domain name (e.g if your e-mail address was 'user@somebody.uninet.co.uk' then your sub-domain would be 'somebody').
Inserting this line will cause the standard counter style to
be displayed, note if you refresh the page the counter should
increase.
To control the style of the digits
you need to ammend the contents of a file found in the root of
your home (FTP) directory. The file named 'counter.dat'
controls the style and the current hit-count any page using the 'counter.cgi' script has received.
Download 'counter.dat' file, and open it using
the standard windows in-built basic text editor 'notepad'
(Windows95 and onwards) which can be found under 'Programs ->
Accessories' on your start menu. There is a section that reads
'digit_style=' with a letter next to it. Change this letter for the
letter corresponding to the style of counter you wish to use (see
table below). You can also 'reset' your counter here by ammending
the number found next to the section 'count=', please make sure you
do not leave this section blank, if you are resetting please make
sure you have at least a '0' for the value of this section. After
you have made any ammendments you must save the file and upload it
to your FTP directory. ** IMPORTANT ** You MUST NOT delete the
'counter.dat' file on the server, when you re-upload the newly
ammended file please make sure you overwrite the existing file
instead.
