LINKS TO SEARCH ENGINES ON THE WEB

smallnew.gif (926 bytes)New to the UK is 2b, not just a search engine (although it does that too) but also providing UK-based news, entertainment reviews, sports headlines, business directories, and more.

A "Meta Searcher" is an engine that submits a search query to several search engines at the same time, and then organises and groups the results for you.  Debriefing is an excellent meta searcher, which will pass a query to the top search engines (HotBot, Yahoo, Excite, Alta Vista, and more) and then sorts the results, removes duplicates, and ranks the results before presenting them to you.

One of the top rated search engines is HotBot, which offers a powerful array of search options and a way of tailoring the search to meet your particular preferences.

AltaVista has received very good reviews, although has in the past been accused of being too complex.

For natural English searching and the ability to refine your queries, try Infoseek.

Another search engine to receive much acclaim is Excite, which presents a useful ranking of the search results based on relevance.

Yahoo is a popular search engine with the useful facility to limit searches to the UK if desired.

Search UK is a search engine which is specific to UK sites only.  Claiming to have over 97% of the UK World Wide Web sites indexed, Search UK has a number of user-friendly features and is certainly handy when you want to filter out those 268,969 hits which come from other countries.

The Search Engine Watch site has regular reports, reviews and comparisons of the major search engines. Visit this site if you want to know which search engine you should be using this week.
